Kansai International Airport Passenger Terminal Building

– a New approach to Airport Buildings –
Kansai International Airport Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), which extends 1.7km on the air side and has a total floor area of 290,000m2, represents dynamic form of “flowing” and has delicate expression. PTB consists of three continuous major sequences; Canyon, Main Terminal Building (MTB), and Wing.
The logic of “geometry” was used as a means of translating image of flow into reality, and the geometry enabled the 90,000 square meters of continuous roof surface of PTB covered by 82,600 same size stainless steel tiles.
The open-air ducts, made from the Teflon membranes, not only efficiently air condition the large space of MTB but provide the departure lobby with gentle indirect lighting by acting as reflector panels for sources of illumination.
